NovelReader feature guide

A user guide for the current app surface. Premium-gated capabilities are marked clearly so local reading stays easy to understand.

Library

The Library screen is where local EPUB and PDF files are imported, searched, sorted, and organized into folders or series.

  • Free Import EPUB and PDF files from the device file system.
  • Free Search, filter, sort, and group books locally.
  • Free Edit local book and folder metadata.
  • Premium Sync eligible book and folder metadata across devices.

Reader

NovelReader includes EPUB and PDF readers with local progress and configurable reading behavior.

  • Free Read EPUB and PDF files offline after import.
  • Free Save local progress on the current device.
  • Free Use reader controls, settings, and bookmarks locally.
  • Premium Sync reading progress, bookmarks, and reader settings across supported devices.

History

History shows recent reading and open activity, grouped by day. Removing a history item hides it from the list but does not delete the book or reading position.

  • Free View and search local recent reading activity.
  • Free Hide individual history items or clear visible history.
  • Premium Enrich history with eligible synced progress.

Updates

Updates is a release-awareness inbox for followed series-bound folders. It helps identify newly detected books and route you to local matches or source browsing.

  • Premium Follow series and store release update records.
  • Premium Scan for new releases through tracker data.
  • Premium Mark updates handled, dismiss updates, and receive optional release alerts.

Browse and extensions

Browse contains Sources, Extensions, and Migrate views for extension-backed source browsing and install management.

  • Install, update, and remove supported extensions from configured repositories.
  • Review extension capabilities before install or update.
  • Premium Sync extension device install metadata, extension configuration, and server connections.
  • Premium Use configured server connections for source browsing, downloads, and server progress where supported.
Developers can read the extension repository documentation for the repository format, manifest contract, bridge API, and publishing workflow.

Tracking

Tracking features let you manage reading status, ratings, want-to-read state, and external tracker metadata.

  • Premium Sync reading status, ratings, and want-to-read state.
  • Premium Store tracker credentials securely through the app host.
  • Premium Use supported tracker adapters such as Open Library and Hardcover where available.

Account and sync

An account is optional for local reading and required for premium cloud features. Premium sync is metadata-oriented and does not upload book files.

  • Free Read locally without signing in.
  • Premium Sync progress, bookmarks, settings, library metadata, tracking data, extension configuration, server connections, and series metadata.
  • Premium Queue eligible offline changes and retry after connectivity, auth, and premium readiness return.

Notifications

Release notifications are optional native alerts for detected series updates.

  • Premium New release alerts require premium release tracking.
  • Notifications can be disabled in NovelReader and in system settings.
  • Web and desktop surfaces still get foreground release scanning when eligible.
